Artist Statement
Once called “Ruthenia”, the Latin word for « Русь » (Rus’), Ukraine has now become an epochal allegory of the timeless notion that events speak when words collapse. Indeed, all signifiers, including “Ukraine” itself, seem to have lost their grip on what Ukraine is about. Through countless discourses, they proliferate more than ever; yet this very excess only intensifies the irruption of the Real. Such is the “apocalyptic” nature of what is taking place today in and around Ukraine. Yet in our postmodern age, contradictions have grown intrinsically exponential. In the end, will negation remain something other and more than annihilation? Will any kind of dialectic still hold?
